Technology Radar v3 Released

At iits-consulting, we’re an assembly of experts in various fields. We advise our customers in teams that are tailored specifically to each engagement. As a result, we cover the whole path from architecture to operations; moreover, this approach leads to solutions we are all proud of. Because our expertise is diverse, we keep a technology radar to make it visible. Today, we’re releasing technology radar v3.

Why We Keep Our Technology Radar

Initially, we wanted to make our fields of expertise visible to ourselves. Additionally, in job interviews I got the same question over and over again: „What technologies are you using in your project and other iits projects?“ Consequently, the radar has become the answer we can point people to. The first version arrived in December 2024 and version 2 followed in October 2025. Furthermore, in the v2 post I promised a version 3 for 2026. Hence, this release keeps that promise.

What’s New in Technology Radar v3

Throughout 2026, we’ve been adding to and polishing our technology radar. As a result, we’re very proud of a release that brings 55 new topics, which makes almost half of the radar new material. Certainly, you’ll find much of what was previously missing. For instance, our cloud native sections now name an opinion at every layer. Examples reach from multi-tenancy and service mesh through GitOps, policy, secrets, backup and observability. In addition, AI has grown well beyond experiments: agent frameworks such as Koog and the OpenAI Agents SDK sit in Trial, while vLLM and llama.cpp carry our inference in Adopt. Furthermore, sovereignty now appears as a real option, with T Cloud Public in Adopt and STACKIT in Trial. Even so, there is still room for improvement, which we plan to address with version 4 in 2027.

So, here are some statistics about our current tech radar:

• 124 topics in total (+53)
• 27 (+3) topics in quadrant Languages & Frameworks
• 15 (+0) topics in quadrant Methods & Patterns
• 29 (+20, 2 changed) topics in quadrant Platforms
• 53 (+30) topics in quadrant Tools

The Calls We Made

Certainly, the most quotable change is Terraform moving to Hold while OpenTofu enters Adopt, because the licensing shift left us wanting long-term freedom from restrictive commercial terms. Similarly, Traefik takes over from Ingress NGINX, and vLLM together with llama.cpp takes over from Ollama. In addition, Kafka and MLflow are the only two topics that changed ring this time, both of them promoted to Adopt. Even so, Methods & Patterns stayed frozen at 15 topics, all of them in Adopt, which makes that quadrant my own favorite candidate for version 4. Consequently, version 4 has a clear job: 24 topics in Trial and 14 in Assess add up to 38 open questions that deserve an answer.

How We Built It (and Thanks)

Our technology radar is a group effort made possible by 27 of us volunteering to add and edit topics. Hence, my thanks go to all contributors as well as to AOE GmbH for open-sourcing their technology radar generator, which we use under the hood. In addition, some topic descriptions were drafted with Homeport, our own secure AI solution, and every one of them was reviewed by a human afterwards.
